Introduction The Philosopher and Mystic The Composer and Musician The Jurist

Haj Ne’mat, Ostad Elahi’s father, is born in Jeyhounabad, a small Kurdish village in Western Iran.

Haj Ne’mat’s marriage to Sakineh Khanoum.

Nour Ali Elahi (Ostad Elahi) is born on September 11 in Jeyhounabad.

Haj Ne’mat is appointed as the intendant of Vakil od-Doleh, lord and governor of the province of Kermanshah.

Haj Ne’mat works at the Royal Court of Justice of Kermanshah.

After an overwhelming spiritual experience, Haj Ne’mat renounces his worldly life to devote himself entirely to the mystical path. As he will not impose his ascetic lifestyle on his family, he offers his spouse the opportunity to regain her independence. Touched by his sincerity and the strength of his vocation, she decides to stay and follow him.
This year also marks Haj Ne’mat’s first complete ascetic retreat.

The family settles for a year in Sahneh, a few miles from Jeyhounabad. Haj Ne’mat wears the traditional white robes of the dervishes and makes his first pilgrimage to Soltan, the founder of the Ahl-e Haqq, a mystical order to which he and his family belonged. Gradually, Haj Ne’mat’s charismatic personality and mystical aura attract a number of people who sought to benefit from his spiritual guidance.

Under the watchful supervision of his father, Nour Ali begins a twelve-year cycle of ascetic retreat. It is during this period that he achieves an exceptional level of mastery on the tanbour (ancient lute).

The family moves to Sahneh again. Nour Ali attends the local school.

Upon rejoining his father on pilgrimage at the shrine of Soltan, Nour Ali contracts a sore throat that inexplicably worsens. After three days of increasing illness, he passes away. While a shroud is being purchased for his burial, he comes back to life. Later, he would say that this experience was like a true changing of the soul, after which nothing would ever be the same for him.
Ostad Elahi's sister, Jani, is born. She will be entrusted with the responsibility of carrying on Ostad’s teachings after his death.

The family moves back to Jeyhounabad, continuing an ascetic and secluded lifestyle of fasting and prayers.

Ostad Elahi’s second sister, Mariam, is born.

Ostad’s twelve years of uninterrupted asceticism come to an end.

Ostad Elahi’s marriage to Khanoumjan.

Haj Ne’mat passes away at age 49. Ostad Elahi assumes responsibility for his two younger sisters, ages 11 and 13.
Ostad walks roughly 120 miles barefoot on the road that leads to Soltan’s shrine. In the same year, he stays for the first time in the capital city of Tehran, where he meets and befriends some of the great musicians of the time.

Returns to Jeyhounabad.

-1928 Ostad divides his time between administrating his estate, going on pilgrimages, visiting religious brotherhoods, studying, and ascetic practices. During this time, Iran is undergoing major upheavals. Reza Shah seizes power in 1924, bringing both the Qadjar dynasty and the country’s feudal regime to an end. In the following years, Reza Shah implements a modernization program throughout the country, notably through significant reforms to the administrative departments.
