Introduction Words of Truth Testimonials

Beyond the treatises that he wrote and published during his lifetime, Ostad Elahi conveyed the essence of his system of thought through informal oral teachings. Beginning in 1964, those who were close to him began preserving these teachings through their personal notes. Presented as a collection of "sayings" that retain the oral style in which they were brought to light, two volumes entitled Words of Truth (Asâr ol-Haqq, 1977, 1991) were published on the basis of a portion of these notes.

The sayings in the first volume of Words of Truth are arranged by subject matter, while those contained in the second volume are presented chronologically. Spanning from June 1969 to April 1973, this second volume of Ostad’s teachings corresponds to the last years of his life.

During the course of those discussions, Ostad always spoke in a clear and simple manner that could be understood by everyone. His talks covered a variety of topics such as the principles of the process of perfection, self-knowledge, the world beyond, the properties of certain foods or objects, duties towards one’s family, and ethical principles and their application in society. These sayings and maxims are far from being a simplified version of his teachings. Rather, they capture the very heart of his wisdom and reveal the intimacy of his teachings, allowing us to see how the theoretical principles of this philosophy take on their full meaning when integrated with a spiritual practice that sheds light on them.

As the only work that directly conveys the results of his personal experience, the format and style of Words of Truth demonstrates what Ostad conceived of as an experimental method applicable to the spiritual realm. The masterfully crafted doctrinal developments play an important role, as do the anecdotes taken from daily life and the references to the great religious and mystical traditions. In Words of Truth we find some of the same philosophical, theological, and spiritual themes developed in Demonstration of the Truth and Knowing the Spirit, though intentionally expressed in a less formal and easier to understand manner.
