Introduction Knowing the Spirit Demonstration of the Truth Commentary on The Book of the Kings of Truth Unpublished Manuscripts

Published in 1963, Demonstration of the Truth (Borhân ol-Haqq) presents for the first time a comprehensive and authoritative historical and doctrinal account of the mystical order of the Ahl-e Haqq, including its development, fundamental principles, and sacred rites, which until then had been kept secret.

In addition to providing a general overview, Demonstration of the Truth also presents significant doctrinal clarifications for the members of the Ahl-e Haqq community. As such, this work is an important landmark in the history of the Ahl-e Haqq, whose doctrines and principles had never been the subject of such a systematic study. Throughout the course of history, the Ahl-e Haqq community, geographically dispersed in Iraq, Azerbaijan, and Iran, had been exposed to diverse influences which in time created discrepancies in the details of their practices and rites, and sometimes even in their fundamental beliefs. This situation naturally led to the separation of the community into conflicting groups, each of them claiming its allegiance to the original teaching of the order. Considering the initiatory and clandestine character of certain aspects of the Ahl-e Haqq tradition, any attempt at a doctrinal unification seemed to be a hopeless task. At the same time, the internal differences and widespread ignorance of the community members regarding the central tenets of their own faith almost necessitated a rigorous study that would clarify matters once and for all, especially since some foreign scholars were actually adding to this confusion: “[…] issues that relate to the visible and public aspect of the practices and beliefs of the Ahl-e Haqq have been accurately recounted by some scholars, but it has not been possible for them to properly understand things which have been hidden or considered secret […]” (p. 248-249).

Throughout the book, the author builds upon his thorough knowledge of the Ahl-e Haqq’s holy scriptures (Kalâm), their hermeneutic tradition, and Islam. The first section of the book sets forth the doctrines of the Ahl-e Haqq in a clear and detailed fashion (its cosmogonic, hierophanic, theophanic, and eschatological aspects, as well as the stages involved in the process of spiritual perfection), while the second section presents Ostad’s answers to numerous questions that were asked after the first edition was published.

Written in a precise style resembling a legal text or catechism, Demonstration of the Truth codifies and harmonizes the practices and doctrines of the Ahl-e Haqq without any ambiguity. Indeed, Ostad’s rigorous approach of crosschecking and critically examining all available sources, as well as inventorying and clarifying the various rites and practices of the Ahl-e Haqq (not to mention definitively establishing the calendar of saints) makes Demonstration of the Truth a truly unique work. Ostad’s critical and systematic synthesis in essence preserved a tradition that would otherwise almost certainly have been lost.

Besides clarifications specific to the Ahl-e Haqq context, Demonstration of the Truth also contains numerous points of a more general scope on the subject of spiritual practice. Thus, the reader will find a vast array of suggestions, recommendations, and practical methods that may shed some light on the steps and processes of the spiritual path. Demonstration of the Truth is currently in its eighth edition.
